Generator Differential Protection: Working Principle, Function, and Setpoint Calculation
1. Principle of Operation Current transformers (CTs) of identical type and ratio are installed at both the generator terminal side and neutral side, measuring three-phase currents IT(terminal side) and IN(neutral side), with positive direction of the terminal-side CT defined toward the generator, and that of the neutral-side CT defined away from the generator (i.e., toward […]

Differences Between Anti-Islanding Protection Relay and Fault Separation Relay
Although both relays ultimately trip the grid-connected circuit breaker to isolate the power source from the utility grid, their protection objectives, triggering scenarios, detection principles, setting logic, and applicable standards are entirely distinct. Neither device can serve as a substitute for the other.

Function of PV Anti-Islanding Protection Relay
The anti-islanding protection relay is an essential grid safety device for grid-connected photovoltaic systems. It continuously monitors grid voltage, frequency and ROCOF at the point of common coupling to detect Loss of Mains conditions. When the utility grid experiences an unexpected outage, the PV system may form an isolated islanding loop, leading to hazardous live-line conditions, abnormal voltage and frequency drift, equipment degradation, and destructive inrush currents during grid re-synchronization. To eliminate these risks, the relay rapidly trips and physically isolates the PV inverter from the public grid once unintended islanding is confirmed. It also prevents premature reconnection by enforcing a mandatory grid stabilization waiting period before system re-energization. Compliant with international grid codes including IEEE 1547, IEC 62116 and VDE-AR-N 4105, this protection provides critical safety assurance and dual-redundant fail-safe functionality for both distributed and utility-scale PV plants. It specifically addresses grid-loss islanding hazards and serves as a vital protective barrier to safeguard maintenance personnel, PV inverters, and overall distribution network assets.
