Product Overview

  • The GWPC-SYN Generator Synchronizing Panel is a cabinet-type control panel integrating automatic synchronizing, manual synchronizing, and synchronism-check functions. Its primary purpose is to enable fast, reliable, and low-impact generator connection to the power system.
  • The enclosure is manufactured from 2 mm zinc-aluminum-coated steel sheet and finished with corrosion-resistant electrostatic powder coating. The standard enclosure dimensions are 2260 × 800 × 600 mm. An optional 2300 × 900 × 700 mm enclosure is available to meet specific project requirements.
  • The panel integrates synchronizing, measurement, indication, selection, control, interlocking, and communication components. It supports multiple synchronizing points and can be connected to the plant SCADA or automation system through industrial communication interfaces.

Product Functions

Automatic Synchronizing Control

  • The automatic synchronizing system continuously compares the voltage magnitude, frequency, and phase angle between the generator and the power system.
  • It sends voltage-raise/voltage-lower commands to the excitation system and speed-increase/speed-decrease commands to the prime-mover governor. Once the synchronizing conditions are satisfied, the device applies breaker closing-time compensation and issues the closing command at the calculated optimum instant.
  • The principal automatic synchronizing device is the GWPR320-SYN Automatic Synchronizing Device.

Multiple Synchronizing-Point Support

  • The panel can be configured for 1 to 8 synchronizing points. Synchronizing-point selection can be performed through a panel-mounted selector switch, HMI, or optional automatic synchronizing-point selection device.
  • Electrical and logical interlocking prevents the simultaneous selection of mutually exclusive synchronizing circuits.

Dead-Bus Closing

  • Where permitted by the approved system operating philosophy, the panel can support dead-bus closing when the bus-side voltage is confirmed to be below the configured dead-bus threshold.
  • Dead-bus closing is permitted only after the voltage and breaker-position conditions have been verified, all relevant interlocks have been satisfied, and an enable command has been received. Since one side of the circuit breaker is de-energized, this function does not constitute conventional synchronizing.

Emergency Synchronizing Setting Group

  • An optional emergency synchronizing setting group can be provided for specific permitted operating conditions. This setting group may use wider voltage- and frequency-difference limits than the normal synchronizing setting group.
  • Its activation is subject to access authorization, logical interlocking, and the power plant’s approved operating procedures. The breaker-closing command remains blocked unless all configured synchronizing conditions are satisfied.

Protection and Interlocking FunctionsOut-of-Synchronism Closing Prevention

The synchronizing device continuously supervises:

  1. Voltage difference, ΔU
  2. Frequency difference, Δf
  3. Phase-angle difference, Δφ
  4. Voltage status on both sides of the circuit breaker
  5. Synchronizing-point selection
  6. Relevant circuit-breaker and disconnector positions
  7. Device operating status
  8. Breaker-closing control-circuit status
  • The breaker-closing command is permitted only when all configured synchronizing and interlocking conditions are satisfied.
  • The maximum configurable limits may include a voltage difference of up to 12 V and a frequency difference of up to 0.8 Hz. These values represent the upper limits of the available setting ranges and should not be used directly as normal operating settings. Final settings must be determined according to the generator, power system, circuit breaker, and project operating requirements.

Fault Lockout

  • If an internal fault, power-supply abnormality, voltage-input circuit failure, or synchronizing-circuit abnormality is detected, the device blocks the corresponding voltage-regulation, speed-regulation, and breaker-closing outputs.
  • Fault information can be displayed locally and transmitted to the plant SCADA or other control systems.

Manual Backup Synchronizing

  • If the automatic synchronizing function is unavailable, authorized operators can perform manual synchronizing using a synchroscope, synchronizing lamps, and synchronism-check supervision.
  • Manual breaker closing remains subject to the required electrical interlocking, logical interlocking, and synchronism-check conditions.

Communication Functions

Telemetry, Telesignalling, and Telecontrol

  • Depending on the selected configuration, the panel can transmit the following information to the plant control system:
  1. Grid-side voltage
  2. Generator-side voltage
  3. Grid frequency
  4. Generator frequency
  5. Frequency difference
  6. Voltage difference
  7. Phase-angle difference
  8. Synchronizing-point selection status
  9. Device operating status
  10. Circuit-breaker status
  11. Alarm and event information
  • Remote commands may include synchronizing-point selection, automatic synchronizing initiation, synchronizing cancellation, and other project-defined control functions.

Industrial Analog Signal Interfaces

  • The panel can provide or receive standard 4–20 mA analog signals for integration with the excitation system, governor, LCU, or plant automation system.
  • Typical signals may include excitation voltage, excitation current, and other project-defined operating parameters.

Ethernet Communication and Time Synchronization

  • The panel supports Ethernet communication with the plant automation system and can record alarm and event information with SOE (Sequence of Events) timestamps.
  • Depending on the selected hardware configuration, time synchronization may be provided through SNTP, IRIG-B, GPS-based time signals, or protocol-based time synchronization.

Intelligent Regulation and Closing Prediction

  • The synchronizing device calculates the optimum instant for issuing the closing command according to the measured phase-angle difference, slip frequency, and configured breaker closing time.
  • The closing command is issued in advance so that the circuit-breaker main contacts close while the phase-angle difference is within the configured permissible range.

Key functions include:

  1. Automatic generator voltage regulation
  2. Automatic generator frequency regulation
  3. Breaker closing-time compensation
  4. Closing-angle prediction
  5. Slip-frequency supervision
  6. Same-frequency synchronizing support
  7. Automatic blocking under unstable or unacceptable synchronizing conditions
  • Where supported by the selected device version, breaker closing-time measurement or adaptive correction is available. Otherwise, the breaker closing time must be entered and verified during commissioning.
  • The typical breaker closing-time setting range is 0.12–0.27 s. The actual setting must be based on the measured closing time of the installed circuit breaker.

The system can be configured for:

  1. Generator-to-grid synchronization
  2. Generator-to-bus synchronization
  3. Bus-section or bus-coupler circuit-breaker synchronous closing
  4. Synchronous closing between two energized power systems
  5. Same-Frequency Synchronizing
  • When the frequency difference across the circuit breaker is extremely small and the phase angle changes slowly, the same-frequency synchronizing function can calculate an appropriate closing instant without relying on rapid phase-angle zero crossing.
  • This function remains subject to voltage-difference, frequency-difference, phase-angle, and relevant interlocking supervision.
