GWPR320-BCU Bay Control Unit
The GoWatron GWPR320-BCU Bay Control Unit is a digital measurement and control device integrating electrical measurement, binary status acquisition, remote control, synchronism supervision, controlled closing and communications. It is designed for bay measurement and control and common signal monitoring in substations, distribution substations and industrial power distribution systems. Available in A, B and C configurations, the unit offers different combinations of voltage inputs, current inputs and synchronising channels. Two Ethernet ports and two RS-485 ports support integration with substation control or SCADA systems via IEC 60870-5-103 over Ethernet and Modbus RTU, with IEC 61850 available as an option.
1. GWPR320-BCU Bay Control Unit -Product Introduction
- The GWPR320-BCU is a digital bay control unit supplied by GoWatron for electrical measurement acquisition from two bays, common signal monitoring and remote control of common equipment. It combines measurement, status monitoring, control, event recording and communications in a single device, providing field data and control interfaces for substation control systems.
- The unit uses a high-performance 32-bit dual-core microcontroller architecture. The main processor incorporates a digital signal processor (DSP) and a floating-point unit (FPU). An independent 16-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) supports analogue signal acquisition. Analogue measurements and binary inputs are processed in real time. The modular hardware design facilitates configuration and maintenance, while an LCD and front-panel keypad allow users to view measurements, adjust settings and perform on-site commissioning.
- For configurations equipped with synchronising functions, the unit evaluates the voltages on both sides of the circuit breaker and the applicable closing conditions according to the selected mode. In synchronising mode, it uses the configured closing advance time to compensate for circuit breaker closing time and determine when to issue the close command.
2. GWPR320-BCU Bay Control Unit-Product Functions
2.1 Configuration Selection

- Optional DC analogue outputs: A three-channel 4–20 mA output option is available depending on configuration.
- DC analogue inputs and outputs are optional. Configuring three DC analogue inputs makes the Ux2 synchronising voltage input unavailable and restricts synchronising functionality. The available combination of analogue inputs and synchronising channels depends on the hardware and firmware configuration.
2.2 Electrical Measurement and Acquisition
- Acquires voltage and current signals and provides power, frequency and other electrical measurements, depending on configuration.
- Supports analogue measurement acquisition from two bays and measurement of common signals.
- Offers optional 4–20 mA DC analogue inputs for signals from external transducers.
- Offers an optional three-channel 4–20 mA output arrangement, available depending on configuration, with selectable measured quantities and configurable scaling limits.
2.3 Binary Status Monitoring
- Acquires status signals from circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches and external equipment.
- Supports local display and remote viewing of binary input states.
- Records status changes to support operational monitoring and event analysis.
2.4 Remote Control
- Receives remote control commands via Ethernet or RS-485.
- Provides up to eight pairs of remote control outputs for opening and closing circuit breakers, operating disconnectors and earthing switches, issuing transformer tap-changer raise/lower commands and performing other control duties.
- Supports Remote/Local control selection.
- Provides direct remote control outputs and separate synchronism-supervised closing outputs, each operating according to its respective logic and the project-specific control circuit design.
2.5 Synchronism Supervision and Controlled Closing
Synchronising functions are available depending on configuration. The following closing modes are supported:

- Synchronism supervision can be initiated by a local manual close command or a remote close command. In the applicable checking modes, the unit blocks the close output when the required conditions are not satisfied and issues an alarm if the checking process fails or times out.
- Configuration C provides two synchronising channels. The two channels must not be enabled simultaneously.
2.6 Communications and Time Synchronisation
- Provides two Ethernet ports and two RS-485 communication ports.
- Supports IEC 60870-5-103 over Ethernet and Modbus RTU, with IEC 61850 available as an option.
- Supports time synchronisation via SNTP, communication messages and IRIG-B.
- Provides a dedicated IRIG-B time synchronisation interface.
- Supports remote viewing of operating status, equipment parameters, binary input states and self-supervision information.
- Supports remote viewing and modification of the relevant settings.
2.7 Event Recording and Maintenance
- Records function operations, operator actions and self-supervision events.
- Supports local and remote reset of unit indications.
- Provides output relay testing and event simulation for on-site commissioning.
- Supports an external serial dot-matrix printer for printing settings, event records and disturbance records.
